Coefficients

Always put the coefficients in front of the fundamental solutions for a differential equation!

When we are given a fundamental solution like $e^{-x}\sin (x)$ → know that $e^{-x}cos(x)$ is also a solution, for the roots $-1\pm i$.

Complex roots

For a root $\lambda =\alpha +i\beta$ ($\beta \ne 0$), we get the fundamental solutions:

$$e^{\alpha x}\cos (\beta x),e^{\alpha x}\sin (\beta x)$$

Note: For $\lambda =-1\pm i$, why do we only get $e^{-x}\sin (x),e^{-x}\cos (x)$ instead of four solutions? → where did the conjugate root go?

• we have $e^{-x-ix}=e^{-x}(\cos (x)-i\sin (x))$ and $e^{-x+ix}=e^{-x}(cos(x)+i\sin (x))$
• thus we get $e^{-x}\cos (x)$
• and $\pm e^{-x}\sin (x)$
  • the negative/positive pair is only a scalar multiple of the other → we drop one!

ZWS / MWS Exercises

Bei Frage wie:

“Hat die Gleichung $\cos (2x-\pi )=x^3-2x^2+2\pi x-3/2{\pi }^2$ eine Lösung” → direkt an ZWS denken!

Wenn kommt “hat” und nicht finde → beweisen, dass eine existiert.
Das gleiche für “hat eine Tangente mit Steigung”.

Dann einfach mit MWS/ZWS beweisen, dass der Wert existieren muss!

Falls die gegeben $[a,b]$ beide $>0$ sind, einfach schauen, ob für ein $\zeta \in [a,b]$ $f(a)<c<f(\zeta )$ (oder mit $b$) existiert.
