The complement of a set $X\subset Y$ is denoted $X^c$ and contains all elements that $X$ does not contain: $X^c=\{y\mid y\in Y\wedge y\notin X\}$.

We define multiple types of intervals:

• open interval (de “offenes”) $(a,b)=\{x\in \mathbb{R}|a<x<b\}$
• closed interval (de “abgeschlossenes”) $[a,b]=\{x\in \mathbb{R}|a\le x\le b\}$
• half-open interval (de “halboffenes”) either $[a,b)$ or $(a,b]$.

For $a$ and $b$ finite, we call their interval a bounded interval (de “beschränktes”). Wenn das Intervall sowohl beschränkt als auch … ist nennen wir es auch kompakt.

We can then define subsets of $\mathbb{R}$:

• ${\mathbb{R}}^{+}=(0,\infty )$
• ${\mathbb{R}}_0^{+}=[0,\infty )$
• ${\mathbb{R}}^{-}=(-\infty ,0)$
• ${\mathbb{R}}_0^{-}=(-\infty ,0]$
